Recurrent uveitis is a common eye disease affecting middle age and older horses. It has been estimated that as many as 12% of the horse population contracts this disease and it is the most common reason that horses develop blindness. Recurrent uveitis has a number of names but they all represent the same disease process, a recurring noninfectious painful inflammation of the eye. Recent advances include a better understanding of the role of Leptospirosis as an underlying cause and surgical treatments like cyclosporin implants and vitrectomy. Besides these advances, this article discusses symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. Recent research summaries are included.
