Intestinal worms remain a serious and changing problem in horses and equines. While once we were concerned about the adult parasites drain on the horse's resources a careful examination of the life cycle reveals that the migrating larvae are responsible for serious disease. This shifts the focus of parasite control to prevent the horses from being exposed to the infective larvae on the pasture. Recurrent colic, diarrhea, poor doing, pneumonia, and a shortened life span can all be caused by poor parasite control. Several strategies have been developed to prevent disease from parasites but there are no absolute answers yet. Changing parasite populations and increased resistance continues to make this an evolving problem. We do have articles where you can learn more about the individual parasites and their life cycles,
...more.
This article discusses the pros and cons of the various products available including Strongid, Strongid C, pyrantel, Zimectrin, ivermectin, Quest, moxidectin, Panacur, fenbendazole, praziquantel, and other benzimadazole dewormers. Timing of dewormers is discussed as are the relative merits and problems with tube worming, pelleted dewormers, and paste wormers.
