Parotid Region, Viborg's Triangle, Carotid Artery, & Guttural Pouch of the HorseThe area where a horse’s head joins the neck, just behind the line of the jaw, is called the parotid area or Viborg's triangle. This area overlies the back of the throat and the larynx and is a complicated mixture of lymph nodes (not shown below), salivary glands (not shown below), large blood vessels and just deep to it all the guttural pouches. In order to illustrate the carotid artery, it's branches, and the guttural pouch the superficial lymph nodes and salivary glands have been removed. The guttural pouch is shaded in blue.
