My 3 y/o stallion, having a day off training, was let into our large arena to frolic and play. He immediately took off barreling towards the corner where there is some deep sand. He did a sliding stop, but still ran his chest into the arena fencing. It has been swollen in the bicep area now for almost a week. He shows lameness in that same (left) front shoulder - esp at a trot - less at his walk or canter. Altho Im not working him at all - I did let him out in the round pen to observe him naturally and cld see the difference in his lameness at the diff strides. I am walking him daily to keep up good circulation in the area. It seems the swelling should have come down by now. Is it time to call a vet? How long can I give this kind of injury basic "lay" persons treatment? (also there were no cuts or scrapes in the area) Im going to try a poultice tomorrow and see if tht helps with the swelling. Thanks for any input. dina |

There is a bursa at the point of the shoulder that can develop chronic inflammation and the most important therapy would be NSAID's like bute. Polticing will not help this bursa, I think it is time to get a vet out and look at this to decide if bute and possibly even more aggressive therapy like corticosteroids might be indicated. DrO |
