I'm not sure if this is where I should have put this, but here it goes. I have a 3 week old Morgan colt that I need a barn name for and I was hoping that someone could help me with ideas. We have picked his registered name and it will be Chandler Creek Evolution, but I am completely stumped on his barn name. Nothing I come up with seems quite right. His sire is FCF Esprit De Lark (Waseeka's Skylark x Evita) and his dam is Hillview Breeze (Trudale Ninja x Hillview April). We plan on keeping the colt for breeding. His personality is bold, cocky, demanding (I guess typical colt attitude, just in excess), and he is hot. Here are some pictures at 4 days old.

Sorry Karen, I'm not the least bit creative, but...aaaahhh, what a cutie! The picture of him marching in front of Mom is adorable. |

Dancer, Soldier? He looks like he's marching in the last picture. Nice looking mare too, I've always wanted a Morgan, never had one yet. |

Funny, Ann. He DOES look like a pretty cocky son-of-a-gun . . . you sure you wanna mess with him as a stud? Angie's suggestions got me thinking along military lines . . . pick a branch of the military and go through the lists of officers . . . Or, you could stick with your "cocky" description and just call him "Foghorn Leghorn" or "Rooster." |

I used to ride at UMASS Amherst, and they bred morgans. Since then, I have LOVED them. I love the sporty ones that are like little warmbloods. Your boy is so fancy! My trainer has a three year old that is in the "Townsend" lines. His barn name is "Townsend". My suggestion is not as noble as his looks are, but it was my first instinct so I am going to say it... "Chandler Bing" from the television show "Friends". |

Cute cute cute!! Love the attitude! Since his registered name contains "Evolution", how 'bout "Darwin"? I do also love "Foghorn Leghorn", Holly . Kind of a mouthful though, huh? But you could just call him to you by saying "Looka here, son, I say, I say!" (Isn't that what he says? Long time since I'v watched cartoons) |

Remember that you should always outrank him, and thus call him "Sarge"! Stacy |

His blaze looks like a cup with milk running out. How about Dripper, Cupper (as in "my cup runneth over"), or Drizzler? His name could be shortened to Lucian (Evolution). Maybe Odin would fit better. He is the Norse ruler of war and wisdom and creator of the world. This guy sounds like he has enough 'tude to handle a name like that! Linda |

I love your ideas. I can't wait to run them by my husband. I have no doubt that leaving him a stud will be interesting to say the least. I won't put up with much from him, and if he proves to be too difficult I won't hesitate to geld him. He is very smart and I think that he will learn quickly what behavior is not acceptable. Thanks again for the ideas and keep them coming. |

Another HA member posted this when I was looking for names. http://www.horses-and-horse-information.com/horsenames/c.shtml |

Gosh, he is a cutie pie. Love the cloud blaze - it reminds me of the clouds used to house the words of the characters on the comics page of the newspaper. Or a big idea cloudburst ... I do like Darwin, but you could also choose a name for someone known for big ideas or thoughts - Einstein, Rodin (The Thinker), Jefferson, Socrates, Plato, etc. Cheers. |

Remembered a really nice Morgan stallion that used to stand up here. His name was Odie...maybe a take on Odin? How about Zeus? Just picked up a pet name book for a whole .25, I'll look through it if you want a specific theme. |

Karen, I have this little rule for myself that I always name any of my animals with "human" names. That being said, I also have a 3 week old colt who is a pistol! I have named him Rorie (or Rory, because I'm unsure of which spelling for now) which in Gaelic/Celtic/Irish means the "Red King". My colt is a bay, but I couldn't help thinking your colt looks like a little Red King also!!! Another great name is Rooney, which means red-headed... I do like Darwin, as it has a nice connection with his registered name. Whatever you choose, he's obviously a cutie! Good Luck! Martha |

He's wonderful...congratulations!! There is a very nice TB stallion named 'Military'...that would suit your boy...my mother in law used to raise Morgan's (we have the last one, Bo, who's now 25 yrs old and looks incredible) and she had a stallion named 'Cavalier'. Let us know what you decide!! |

I always like to have a piece of the registered name in the barn name. i.e. my QH named Rapped in Diversity has the barn name Diva (or Divet) for diversity. How about Cree for the Creek part of his name? or Andy which is part of Chandler? or Lute which is sort of part of Evolution? Ella B. |

I still like Taz, but to be funny you could always call him "Chandler Bing" (the character from Friends). My husband has to call all our horses by two names. For instance I have a TWH who's registered name is Carmen Miranda, I call her Carmen and he calls her Carmie Lou. We also have a Sage, he calls her Purple Sage. Go Figure... |

Taz is my Jack Russel Terrier's name. Fits him perfect. He can be a holy terror with all his energy! Thinks he's 10' feet tall and bullet proof. And he also walks with a rather military strut. |

I'm sorry about not giving more feedback on your name ideas. I really love how imaginative they all are, but it just seems that they don't quite fit him. I'm probably being way too picky. I don't know why I'm having such a problem naming him. I've never had this problem before. Lord help me when I have kids. |

Karen, believe me, I understand. My husband and I had an agreement when we had kids--I would name girls, he would name boys--we only had boys! Good thing, too, because I could never settle on a name that a kid would have to live with the rest of his life! Horses do seem to grow to suit whatever you name them though. So if you like a name, it will eventually seem right. My little filly was named Foxxy Cleopatra. When we called her "Foxxy", she acted rather sassy. I started calling her "Cleo" instead, and lo if she didn't soften up! So watch out for too feisty of a name! |

I think that we have decided on a name. My husband thinks that we should name him Major, and I like it well enough. He does have a horse named Black River Major in his background so it kind of fits. I want to thank you all so much for your ideas. I am definitely keeping these names in mind for future foals. Thanks again. |

Karen, I sympathize with you. Sometimes it can be very tough to come up with a name that suits. I tried out three different barn names before finding one that really clicked with an older mare I purchsed. The process took about 7 months. It was frustrating for me because usually in the first hour of meeting a new horse the name will come to me. Major is agreat name but after a bit if it doesn't seem right, try a different one. |
