I will be in Virginia for about a month from June 15th. Would like to take a couple of horses along to ride with my sister.

Anyone know a place to board that has access to trails? Rough board is okay, if necessary. Everyone will be at work except me so I could always do a little work 'til they are off.

I will be staying between Alexandria old town and Mount Vernon along the George Washington Parkway, so anything within a half hour or so would be great. Someone told me that Ft. Belvoir has a stable?

Erika,
My sister and brother-in-law live in Ft. Belvoir (not actually on the army base though!)... Though I'm not familiar enough with the area to know about the boarding facilities, I am aware of some BLM land that has extensive trails available for public use. (I learned about this when I adopted my mustang mare last year as the auction was held at this location). The area is known as Meadowood Special Recreation Management Area and is located at 10406 Gunston Road in Lorton, VA (just down US Rt. 1 a few miles from Ft. Belvoir). If you get down to the Richmond area or the Gloucester/Mathews area, let me know. BTW, I'm a new member (rather inactive at this time, unfortunately) of Dragon Run Saddle Club based out of the middle peninsula of Virginia (www.dragonrunsaddleclub.org). Terri Haynie (who introduced me to this site) is our president and the club frequently rides at a wonderful park in Gloucester called Beaver Dam as well as other locations in the state. The website has trail information available. Good Luck!

Thanks, Martha. I will check out the info you gave me.
I sure would like to take the horses with me. But my sister hasn't been able to find a place that will take them short term.
I worked all spring trying to get all of us into shape, and I'd hate to lose a month of conditioning.

Erika, here are three places to look:

Virginiaequestrian.com
Horsetalkmagazine.com
Virginiahorse.com

There are some very active saddle clubs up in that area, and Martha is righton with her info on the BLM land and riding in that area. I will see if I can dig up any more specifics for you.

Thanks, both of you. I have feelers out for some of the sources.
I'll let you know if I find something. Also continue to let me know if you hear anything else, will you?

Martha, I checked out your dragonrun riding group. Looks like a lot of fun! Wish we had something like that here. Lots of great photos. Have fun!

Erika,
Terri and other founding members get all the credit... I am quite a latecomer to the group and, as yet, have not had the opportunity to go on a group trail ride, but I did attend/audit a nice "Parelli" style clinic earlier this year where I finally got to meet Terri! I find that the equine information passed on to members is incredibly helpful, so it is great to belong to some kind of network...
