I recently purchased a five-year-old American Bashkir Curly. Someone told me their life span is fairly short compared to other horses. This person was either going on hearsay or basing it on the ABC's similarity to draft horses, which he understood to short-lived as well. Does anyone have any solid information on this subject?

I certainly cannot answer your question but can't resist: I've never heard of Bashkir Curlys could you post a picture?

Hi Jos. I will try and post a photo of my curly when he returns from training in 30 days. In the meantime, I suggest linking to the following for more info (including photos): http://www.ansi.okstate.edu/breeds/horses/bashkircurly/index.htm

Hello Heidi M,
We use to care for a herd of Bashkir Curlys, the owner was allergic to other breeds, and did not know that they were shorter lived nor noticed premature aging, though I cannot remember how old the older horses in the herd.

Thanks, Dr. O. I understand from the breeder that ABCs are slow maturing like Morgans, and my Internet research says that the breed has similar blood typing to both Morgans and feral horses. Do you have any idea about the longevity of those breeds? I'm not losing sleep over this--just want to know what to expect as the years roll by.

I am not aware of any difference in the life span of Morgans assuming their propensity for easy keeping is well managed. Certainly feral horses do not live as long but this the environmental effect may be totally responsible.

Heidi, I am contemplating getting a Bashkir, since you are new to the breed as I am, how do you like them? How is the temperament of yours? Are they easy to train? I haven't heard of the age issue, I can't think of a reason why they would have a shorter life span than other domestic equine..I think they are very much like a Morgan from what I've been reading. Thanks for the information, I appreciate it...Trish
