Posted on Tuesday, Jun 17, 2008 - 9:32 am: Hi All!I am stationed in Okinawa, Japan with my family. My husband is a Marine. After driving around the island one day I found a horse stables and stopped by. It just so happened that it is japanese owned but Americans could take lessons. I told the manager that since she was leaving i was interested in taking over the barn. I am now the American Manager. I am incharge of all the horses care, and lessons, etc. Since there are a slim amount of horses here in Okinawa, there is NO Vet, Farrier, etc. NOTHING. So all the care for everything is for me to do. The living conditions of these horses are not comparible to a barn in the states by any means. They have 8x8 stalls, get about a 1/2 trash bag full of shavings for bedding, and have deteriorated stall mats, that really do no good. They order there hay from the states that come in bales about 1ft x 2 ft size. (tiny) and it is $500 every other week. Alot of the horses are lame, have prior injuries and havent had proper treatment. My point of this post is to ask anyone if they know of or have any ideas, as of somewhere that might provide donations to a place like us? We provide alot lessons and our time to other military families who want to learn about horses and riding. We just dont have the conditions or good resources to get better care for these animals. You can check out our website @ www.miharahorseclub.com to find some pictures. (and just think those are the good pictures of the horses and facility) Thanks all who took the time to read! Posted on Friday, Jul 9, 2010 - 11:38 am: Samantha,My name is shelly and I have been on the Island for 5 years now, I am one of the Judges at the barn and I used to take care of the horses feet before I had back surgery a year ago. I love each and every horse out there but after I retired from the Marine Corps I need to find a job that would actualy pay me. I have spent alot of money at that barn and you can work all day every day and never accomplish everythign that needs to be done out there. I do know someone who may be able to help with the horses feet. This guy does trip horses feet and said that he would do it when he can. As far as for the vet work, I have spoken with the vets on base and they need to do training and are willing to come out occasionaly to do training. I know that it is not much but, it is better than the cow vet that they have come out any time that one of the horses colics! Usualy that guy does not know what to do and what he does do is not effective. If you can get banimine from him I would do it and keep it in a refrigirator, and keep it away from the japanese. Good luck with the donations, I hope that you will be able to find something because these horses are in such desperate need of anything!!! They have worked so hard and they need just a little comfort in their lifes. I did see a place where you all may be able to get some extra wood shavings, it is close to foster. I have not checked yet but they have a bunch of them and I am not sure how they dispose of them. I could stop and ask or you could call me and i could tell you where it is. Any way, let me know If I can help. I will be on the island for 2 more years. I have just been unable to take over the barn as the manager. They have asked me quite a few times but when I was active duty it would not have worked. I now have a new job and I still do not have much time to spare. I have owned horses my entire life and I sold my last two horses before I came to Okinawa 5 years ago. A sad day, but I knew I was going to be over here for a while. I have been helping out at Mihara since the second day I arrived on the island. I guess I have not been out in a while, but i did hear about Dihao. Any way, my name is shelly Henderson and my E-mail is shelly2u@gmail.com. let me know if I can help. Shelly |
