We have a 3 wk. old foal who seems in great health. All of a sudden he has started losing big patches of hair around his head,ears and face and a little on his chest}. He is nursing, eating hay and we give him calf manna twice a day. The patches are just bare skin with no crustiness. Can anyone help?}

Fred what is calf manna and why are you feeding this to your foal?, at three weeks all he needs is mum's milk and some hay! I never give my foals anything but mum's milk and hay until they are at least three months old.

I'd stop the calf manna straight away, remember that the horse stomach is nothing like the caw's stomach

Welcome Fred,
Allowing foals to begin eating along with mother is OK though I would prefer that you use a feed specifically designed for feeding weanling foals. Specific creep feeding is usually begun at 2 months of age when the foals size outgrows the ability of the mare to produce adequate nutrition. Having good quality hay available is certainly one way to deal with this. For more see, Equine Reproduction » The Lactating Mare, Nursing Foal & Weaning » Weaning Foals from Mares}.

For more on causes of hair loss see, Equine Diseases » Skin Diseases » Hair and Coat Problems / Itching / Irritated Skin » Overview of Hair Loss & Irritated Skin

Calf Manna is a supplement. The bag says to give foals 1/2lb per day. We just let the foal eat a little while the mare is eating her grain. We have always given our foals this supplement with no problems. I will read the articles suggested thanks.

Don't know how to report this but tried to read the discussions on Alopecia and cannot get it to come up. Had no problems bringing up other discussions so I think something is wrong with the alopecia one.

Hello Fred,
It is not the discussions that I want you to read but the topics article. I have just been there and am not having any problems. (I access the site the same way you do through the internet).

Using the navigation frame on your left, put your cursor over the Diseases topic and a submenu will roll down, then scroll down and place your cursor over the Skin topic, then go down and click on the Hair and Coat topic. This will take you to the menu with the Overview of Hair Loss & Irritated Skin article. Click on it and it should come up. We are not experiencing any other reported difficulties and our logs say the page has been accessed 11 times in the past 24 hours. If you have problems tell me the page on which the link has failed you and what the error message reads.

I didn't mean to mislead you. I did get into the info regarding the skin diseases and read them. But I was also interested in the discussions regarding alopecia. That was what I couldn't access. Thanks
