Spring is finally here and it is time to store those smelly hairy winter horse blankets. I have been banned from throwing these in the washing machine since I broke a almost new machine doing this last year. :(

So, I have had to be inventive this year....all of the laundramats in town have signs banning the washing of horse blankets....
Mine smell terrible and need to be cleaned before storage....so, as I was passing by one of those manual "spray it yourself" type carwashes the other day I thought I would give this a try.
Wow.
The high pressure soap followed by the high pressure water cleaned a BMB blanket that was positively stiff with dried manure so that it looked and smelled brand new. (Be sure to bring a rubbermaid tub or such to throw the blanket in to get it back home to air dry or your car will be a mess).

Also, I made a giant horse hair (lint) brush using a clean paint roller and lining duct tape sticky side out in rows across the "rolly" part of the paint roller and than running this across the underside of my turnout blanket. Works like the sticky lint rollers that you use on business suits and such, but more heavy duty. My turnout blanket has a flannel kind of cotton lining and the hair is really stuck on there , but this did the trick.

Another handy trick for removing hair from a horse
blanket is those softer rubber curry's that have been around for a few years now. Throw your blanket over a fence, or better yet a piece of plywood for a solid backing and use the rubber curry on the inside liner of your blanket. They will ball up the hair if used in a circular motion or use in a downward stroke to get hair off. Also, the hair in the velcro (everybody's favorite!)can be removed using a cat's wire slicker brush very gently. (the kind you can get in any pet store.) Once the hair is removed the velcro is usually much more effective. THEN take your blanket to the car wash! :-)

Presure washers work great when cleaning blanket and pads too!
