I've moved to a new barn and instead being in a controlled training barn, I'm making my own decisions about vaccinations. HMM, this can be good and bad, I thought I knew what I wanted, but now I'm confused.
After reading all the articles I thought the intranasal flu was the way to go.
1) I hit a deadend when I called the vet to see if they carried the intranasal vaccine. The answer was they'd never heard of it.(ok, this was his office staff not him). No problem I thought, I'd just talk to him when he came out and ask for a prescription.
2) When looking through the supply catalogs I noticed that all the vaccinations I normally get are combo shots (Tetanus, Flu, Rhino, 3-way sleeping sickness) FYI the other items she normally gets are Rabies, Potomac Horse Fever (I'm considering opting out on it this year).
3) Do you normally give the Intranasal Flu in addition to the combo shot, or is there a combo shot available without the Flu. My catalog didn't list one.
4) Is there anything in particular I should ask my vet to combine with the Intranasal Flu. He seems to be a pretty nice guy, but I'm a new client. So I'd like to make sense if I try to get him to do something different.
5) Is the intranasal flu available in anything other than the 10 pack?
I've delayed writing this message because I thought all I needed to do was sit down, read some more and figure it out.
Well I've given up and I'm sure once you tell me the answer it's really simple. Just don't revoke my horse owner license over this. I've only had my horse two years so I'm still in a training saddle.

Hello SB,
I will be gentle. Taking your questions in order:
2) Yes there are combination shots (EEE WEE Tetnus) without flu in them and I am surprised they are not in your catalog as they are commmonly avalable from all manufacture's.
3) Yes, the combination injection without the flu.
4) It depends on the circumstances, for specific recommendations based on risk see, Care for Horses: Disease Prevention and Health Care: Vaccines and Vaccination Schedules:
Recommended Vaccination Schedules
5) Not that I have seen.

Thanks Dr. O. I checked another (guess I should have done more research) and found te vaccination without the flu. The vet only has the one with the flu, so I'm resigned this year to doing the "traditional" routine. I will however use this opportunity to talk with him and plan for next year. Some others at the barn are interested in the intranasal flu so maybe we can "split a 10-pack". Thanks again.
