Hello Dr. O,

Last week I vaccinated my horses, and one of the mares decided to pull back and rear as I had the syringe in her neck. I was injecting the vaccine, and the needle pulled out, spurting some of the vaccine as it did. Needless to say, it did not get into her muscle. Now she has a swelling on her neck with a lump in the center. I am wondering if it will eventually go down. This mare is a bit looney and hard to handle. (She is better with me than with a vet, and she actually broke a vet's finger while he was trying to give her shots). I really try not to have my vet deal with her unless it is absolutely necessary. (I'd like to keep him). I don't think vets need to be put in danger and they are not here to train our horses.
Anyway, do you have any suggestions as to treatment? What are the dangers of having vaccine under the skin like that?
Thanks for your reply.

Cold packs would be fine as long as it is not worsening and yes it will go away. See Equine Diseases: First Aid: Pressure Wraps, Poultices, Cold and Heat Therapy for Swelling in Horse Legs for specific recommendations for temperature and times.
