Hi Dr O. I read the article on human vitamins. Most human vitamins contain 400mcg of folic acid Times that by 4 is 1,600mcg. Is that to much. That amount seems way to much. I dont want to go out and buy horse vitamins as he will hopefully only take vitamins for a short while. I just want to suppliment my horse at the moment as the hay is terrible here.I know about the dangers in pregnat mares. Do you think this amount of folic acid can hurt? Thank you Katrina

Hello Katrina,
The dangers to pregnant mares and people are not with folic acid supplementation, which is a good thing as it prevents neural tube defects. The problem is with the use of folic acid while using antibiotics. Under these conditions it actually causes a deficiency of the active form folate.

Read carefully the side panel in Equine Medications and Nutriceuticals: Antibiotics and Antimicrobials: Trimethoprim -Sulfa which explains this seemingly contradictory phenomenea.
