DrO ~ I read in another discussion that you HAVE dealt with this at least once. My vet called Indy's condition "serous (sp?) cord.

Background - Indy was gelded in April by his breeder's vet. By June, when the incision was still draining a tacky, smelly exudate, I knew something must be wrong. When my vet checked it, he said the cord on one side must have been left a little long and had become infected. He said he would have to open that up again and remove the infected part of the cord.

We had this done on the 26th of this month. He just laid Indy down in his stall. Sure enough, the head of the cord was lumpy with scar tissue, and the infection extended about an inch up the cord. My vet was able to re-cut the cord well above the infected area, and he seemed surprised that the cord had been left SO long.

Indy is recovering very well and already seems more comfortable than he was before. My vet put him on SMZ - which he said he doesn't usually do, but just as a precaution since there WAS infection present.

Is there anything special I should do to care for this other than to see that Indy gets adequate exercise? Needless to say, this has been a bit traumatic for me, considering what I just went through with DJ :(

Thanks for being here!

This would be a judment call based on the appearance of the cord and surrounding tissues. Under ideal circumstances I think the exercise and antibiotic could be enough.

If there is any question about the tissues remaining infected or the drainage being inadequate perhaps cleansing the incision, hosing out the wound, and spraying with a nitrofurazone spray daily could be added, see Equine Diseases: Skin Diseases: Wounds: First Aid, Care, and Proud Flesh.

Thanks, DrO :) It looks like things are going just fine. Indy was galloping around the pasture today, despite the fact that it was so hot and humid I could hardly move. There is a little bit of swelling, but my vet told me to expect that. But, it's draining well, and Indy is not at all touchy about letting me examine it.

Thanks again :O

Hi DrO and Friends ~ I thought I'd post this here instead of under the "Bladder Stones" thread since Indy never actually had bladder stones - he had internal abscesses from his castration infection. The details are on the "Bladder Stones" thread.

Anyway, we recently took him back to Purdue for what will most certainly be his last check up. He's been off all antibiotics for almost a year, and there was no change to the small scars left by the abscesses on the outer wall of his bladder, and no sign of recurring infection. So his surgeon released him with a clean bill of health.

DrO, I just wanted you and all my friends here to share this wonderful news.

That's wonderful news Suzy! You two look so cute together . Now would that be Indy showing off his best side for the camera? Love his flaxen mane. What a wonderful feeling to know that the surgeon has given you a clean bill of health. Cheers, Susan and Laser Bilsky

Elizabeth, you just made my day!

Not to mention the comments from all the rest of you. By the way, Susan, Indy is quite convinced that all his sides are good.

Thanks, everyone ~ from both of us.
