Hi, We are getting rid of our old chest freezer because it stopped working and i was wondering if it would be useful for grain storage. It would be airtight and that is why I am not sure. Would the grain need to breath some? And would it be different between straight oats and a sweet feed mix? I would appreciate some "feed" back on this. Thank you, Angela

A friend of mine uses an old freezer for Alfalfa pellet storage, which is just about the same thing you're talking about. She loves it because all the little critters can't get in, and the pellets stay nice and fresh. I think it would work the same way with the grain, it would stay nice an fresh.

Good Luck

Just take the handle/lock mechanism off for safety sake.

I currently use 2 chest freezers for storage of all of the grain, I have used them for years and would recommend anyone to use them. I buy my grain a ton at a time, the one freezer I pour the grain into, the other one I use to store the un opened bags in until it is time to refill the primary freezer. Keeps the coons, chickens, cats, dogs, rodents and the occasionally loose horse out of it.... Good luck, Fred

Yes, and particularly good if you are short of waterproof sheds... if the shed leaks a bit (only a bit now...) then the grain still stays dry in the freezer.

All the best
