I manage a small private farm with about 10 acres of pasture in Southwest Florida. We turn out 8 horses in these areas sometimes almost 24 hours a day if weather permits. We want to plant some mature oaks for shade, but I am worried that they will eat the bark and leaves. I am worried about the health of the trees and my horses! I know that horses will chew on pretty much anything in sight, so I need some advice! Thanks! |

Hello Helen, Though hard to predict, horses will frequently chew on the bark of trees even when forage is available. You will find recommendations in this section, Care for Horses: Nutrition: Horses Eating Things They Shouldn't: Pica, Coprophagia, Trees. For information on the toxicity of oak see Equine Diseases: Poisons , Venoms & Poisonous Plants. DrO |
