Is a trailer floor of treated red pine 2x6's strong enough for horses? The planks have gaps of slightly under a half inch and are secured to cross braces set 2.5' apart. I'm concerned my horse may not be safe in the trailer with the treated pine floor because recently a friend replaced her floor and was told by lumber yards and others that pine wasn't strong enough. It was recommended to use fir 2 x 8's instead. |

Marybeth, This is only an opinion, but I would agree that 2X6 Pine sounds like it may be bit light for a large horse. I recently replaced a trailer floor and went for full 2" oak despite the extra expense. I have also read that pressure treatment weakens the strength of lumber. As a temporary solution, You might consider putting a layer of 3/4 plywood on top of the existing floor. But since this would trap moisture, it should only be considered to hold you until you can replace the floor. |

I have seen treated 2X stock used for floors but I agree with Robert, it always has seemed a little light to me. DrO |
