Hello DrO ! What schedule would you suggest for a mare that was infested with pinworms for the past two years. She still has shelving, and a visible vertebrae. Will daily pyrantel granules help ? I have wormed her a few times with zimekterin gold and once with quest because I did not have anything at hand at that time... and would prefer to get rid of some of the parasites first. She is currently nursing, rarely but nursing an 8 month old. The mare also has a problem filling - her abdomen was quite big 7 months ago, and now it shrunk a little. I know it will take years to bring her back to health, but I'd like to know what worming options I may have - I read the article about the schedules etc. Thank you N.

You need to remove the nursing foal Nastia, even occasional nursing is a big drain. The schedules recommended in the articles are effective against pinworms, Nastia. Though this seems to be a commonly misreported, I have never found evidence that pinworms are resistant to ivermectin or moxidectin, for more on this see Diseases of Horses » Colic, Diarrhea, GI Tract » Parasites and Worms » Pinworms (Oxyuris). That is a very good suggestion.. I have been suggsted to do that while ago, and I know that it would be best for the mare to remove the foal.. but at this time, due to the family dispute I don't have sufficient acerage here in the Adirondacks (I have more downstate NY where we will be moving everyone soon) for such transfer or change. Thank you for the information about the pinworm and ivermectin information ! Nastia
