My pregnant mare is approaching her 7th month of pregnancy at the same time that we are giving our ranch shots - in February. I was looking at the rhino/flu shot that we are giving, and it says it covers : Equine Rhinopneumonitis-Influenza Killed Virus Vaccine Calvenza EIV/EHV is for the vaccination of healthy susceptible horses 6 months of age or older, including pregnant mares, as an aid in the reduction of respiratory disease due to equine herpes virus type 1 (EHV-1) and type 4 (EHV-4) and by equine influenza types A, and A2. Since the pneumabort covers the ehv 1 subtypes, is it safe to give her both of these vaccines at the same time? Or should I find a vaccine that just does the flu and give the pneumabort with it. Thanks. |

Dr O will advise more fully and correctly but I think EHV 1/4 is supposed to be given at 5, 7 and 9 months - I am not sure if there is any benefit in giving it now if you missed month 5 but there always seems to be a bit of leeway in these "rules"... Best wishes Imogen |

The simple answer Prakash is you should avoid giving two vaccines to the same disease at the same time. The question more difficult to answer is which vaccine to give to pregnant mares. For more on this issue with EHV related abortion see Diseases of Horses > Reproductive Diseases > Problems Keeping Mares Pregnant > Equine Herpes & Abortion. DrO |

I think I would like to use the killed ehv1/4 vaccine. The only thing i don't understand is for the pneumabort it says it covers 1p and 1b subtypes- are these subtypes found in the ehv1/4 vaccine? It doesn't really mention it. |

The designation 1p and 1b subtypes is not used much anymore and Fort Dodge must think it sounds good so leaves it on there. If I remember right this designation was based on where the virus particles travel on a electrophoresis plate. I am not aware that this designation has significance to a vaccines efficacy. I once asked a researcher at Fort Dodge which of the two he thought would be more efficacious against abortion and he believed the combination product but said the company will not spend the money to get it so approved. Oh, well that's nice of them. Do you use the fort dodge with the flu in it also? I don't see a fort dodge product that has just the ehv1/4 in it by it's self- i'm probably overlooking it. Thanks! |

My apologies Prakash, I somehow missed your last question. Yes they make a EHV1/4 without the flu named Equivac EHV 1/4. DrO |
