I have had several foals... all show the submissive 'yakking as I like to call it to other horses, and are careful around the adult ones... This years colt is a little different. . :-) Tommy not only 'yaks' at the adult horses but also looks like he is going to sit down and belly up to them? I have never witnessed this kind of submissive behavior before... He actually buckles under when my older gelding noses his hind end.. At one time he almost dropped to his knees.... I am not talking about the ' bite knee' game that geldings love to play... this is a baby submissive act? This afternoon when I turned out my gelding with him.. Tommy was very happy to have his friend... but on the other hand when my gelding nosed his hind end , Tom just about sat completely down on his haunch.. This happens everyday.. ???

Anyone care to comment?

Sounds like he'll be easy to train Ann! I have only one foal Like that it was a filly and she was one of the best horses I ever owned, got along well with other horses and an overall good disposition.

I don't know if the overly submissiveness had anything to do with it or not

Diane, my trainer said the same thing.. But also that I should start with the girthing process as he might be one of those horses that decides to lay down when tightening it.. ??? He is a smarty pants for sure.. ex: He has had a rough beginning.. *pan fed for over two weeks etc.. then trying to bleed out after gelding..so strange humans bring shots and he is weary..* There was a time that he would not let me put a halter on him.. he would see me with it and bolt.. SO, I did a mock round pen lesson with him.. you can keep your feet moving till you let me put a halter on you.. It took maybe 15 mins of keeping him moving and then he came to me, head down, licking and chewing.. AND he never once ran away when I come in with the halter since then!~
But his submissive behavior to the point of almost laying down has me perplexed..

Anyone else.. ??

Interesting.

Just wondering if this was an orphan foal? Sometimes these horses have a hard time learning to interact with herdmates if they missed out on normal socialization with their dam.

Also wondered if he has ever had turnout with "peers" or other youngsters? He may be accutely aware of his age/size disadvantage in a herd of adults.

He sounds like a sensetive boy. Just my opinion, but I think that he sounds very sweet and as long as he is 'handled with care' he will make a great friend. Good luck!

Kristin.. He is sensitive ,, very.. Never orphaned , he was kept off his mother with a muzzle till his swallow developed better, he was always with mom.. But he has never been with any others his size.. then again.. two of my past foals were never with peers, only the young adults, and they only did the young yakking thing..

He is a keeper, at one time I thought about selling him.. but he is going to color out nicely, I am seeing some white hairs over his rump.. and he moves like a butterfly.. nicely balanced all ready..

Thank your lucky stars that he is sweet natured. We had to castrate Champal at 10 months as when he was seven months he was mounting the mares and thinking he was the king of the jungle!

Your babe is lovely by the way.
