Are too many pears as bad as too many apples? There's a pear tree in my mare & foal's pasture and I see them occasionally munching on the fallen fruit. Should I be getting rid of these? Or are they okay for my horses to eat at will? The mare in particular seems to love them.

Good question, Sharon. We have persimmon trees in our pasture and the horses eat them. Makes me pucker to watch!

Yes pears and apples and too a less extent persimmons all have the potential to overload a horses system with sugar. Usually in a pasture situation horses adapt slowly to these hazards and so you get away with it. But there is a potential for gassy colic, diarrhea, and choke.
