Hello Rae, and Welcome to The Advisor,
the timing of the shot is explained in the article associated with this forum under the West Nile Virus header. Besure you press the link to the article on WNV where there is a lot more on vaccination. Though not approved for pregnant mares there have been no adverse reactions and thought to be safe. The important question unanswered yet is when are foals of vaccinated mares best vaccinated. The concern is the passive immunity from the mare will inactivate the vaccine. If no more information is developed, we well recommend vaccination to begin at 6 months.

I have a mare due to foal in early July. My question is should I give the WNV shot in April to my mare and again at first of June so the foal is covered also. I live in Illinois and there are alot of cases of WNV.

I think I would Tamela if the incidence rate has been high. In fact you should start a bit earlier so that your mare is protected during the mosquito season. Theoretically then the foal is also protected during the remainder of the season. We should have specific information this year on when to vaccinate the foal.

Is there any concern that WNV vaccine given to a mare prior to breeding will prevent her from conceiving?

Something I think would be of interest to all horse owners:

I also noticed mention of Yellow Fever which has been a recent topic of discussion.

Dr O I have a mare who is almost 6 months in foal
and she has a history of reactions to vaccines. I have a dilemma over west nile. She has never had WN vaccine. Her vaccine reactions to date include swelling at the site, so sore she needs bute, takes baby steps, once her legs swelled from a flu/rhino. I have pre medicated her but during pregnancy I try not to. Anyway, during her last pregnancy she had her 3 pneumoborts but got progressively worse. This is her second pregnancy and during the 5th month we gave her Pneumobort. She ran a fever of 102, she was on bute for 3 days. Could barely walk. This was the worse reaction. She is dramatic but the vets suggest no more Pneumobort.
I live in So Calif and we had our first case of West Nile abount 2 months ago. In general our vets are saying vaccinate now and pregnant mares after 6 months and/or in the 10th month. I am trying to weigh the incidence of the disease and also considering this mares tendency to be especially sensitive.
She is due end of May and we could be just starting into the mosquito season then. The breeding farm I use has vaccinated pregnant mares with WN and will continue to do so, but they had an unusually high incidence of stillborn foals in 2003. ( 10% on mares who have no history of this) necropsies were inconclusive. Would you wait till she foals?
We have only had 2 cases but they say 2004 will be worse. I know this puts the baby with no immunity, I was wondering about the possibility of covering the baby at birth with an oral Igg or ? any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks, Debbie

With just one case of WN case in the state and her history of reactions, I would wait. I don't think there is a relation between the 10% still births and WN vaccination, 10% rate of fetal loss is not that odd.
