 | Vaccines an Overview Recommendations for vaccines seem to be constantly changing:- In the past few decades there have been several new infectious diseases diagnosed in horses and to counter these diseases equine vaccines have been developed.
- A trend toward intranasal administration of modified live vaccines to increase efficacy and decrease complications of injected vaccines.
- New modified viral vaccines with substituted nucleic acids that elaborate disease antigens to induce immunity.
- Release of vaccines with "conditional approval" and incomplete research into efficacy, safety, and proper administration regimens.
These rapid changes have led to confusion about vaccination and with the growing number of vaccines given to the horse is also the feeling we are "sticking" our horses more than we are riding them. In the "Overview" article the principles of vaccinating horses are presented along with a brief synopsis of the qualities of each individual equine vaccine. Links to detailed articles on each disease and detailed vaccine information are given to those who want to know more. In the "Schedules" article, specific vaccination schedules for horses based on age and use are presented.
