OK - sorry for those looking for a burrito recipe!

I have a couple of foals a year, so am always dealing with a horse's first experience with most things. I have found a simple way to blanket for the first time. Now my horses are handled from day one and every day for at least the first 6 months, so this is not for an unhandled/trusting horse. I let them see and sniff the 'burrito' before beginning.

It's pretty simple I take a blanket and fold it in two place --- like a burrito. So folding it in thirds, I first fold the hind end part of the blanket toward the front of the blanket. I then overlap the back by folding the front part of the blanket over it. I then place the 'blanket burrito' over the horse's back, where the saddle would go. I can usually do this myself, I see how the horse reacts and do as much as they are comfortable with. I blanket my horses w/o drama in one session.
After placing the blanket across the horse's saddle area, the front of the blanket is easily unfolded into the correct position. I let the horse walk around the stall if they want and hold the blanket to keep it from sliding off. I unfold the front part of the blanket into the right position. The hind end is usually the most worrisome part for the horse, but mine have all been fine with the process.
If the horse seems worried have a helper and go slow, and I always am in a enclosed area with a halter and shank.
The blanket burrito has served me well and is smoother/less scary than just scrunching the blanket up.
