Posted on Tuesday, Apr 24, 2007 - 10:19 am: For some situations the feed through growth regulators are useful for controlling house and stable (though not horseflies and gnats) flies around barns.DrO Vet Ther. 2007 Spring;8(1):61-76. Safety of elevated dosages of a 0.24% diflubenzuron pellet administered orally to horses. Ross DH, Heird C, Byrd JW, Beauchemin V, Kiess W. Farnam Companies, Inc. The safety of a feed-thru pellet formulation containing the insect growth regulator diflubenzuron (0.24%) for control of manure-breeding flies (Musca domestica L. and Stomoxys calcitrans L.) in horses was evaluated. Pellets were administered orally at 0, 1, 3, and 5 times the clinical dosage (0.12 to 0.20 mg/kg) on a daily basis for 31 consecutive days. Variables examined included daily clinical observations, hematology, coagulation, serum chemistry, acetylcholinesterase inhibition, body weights, and physical examinations. Horses remained healthy throughout the study, and no adverse reactions or events related to the pellets were observed. Statistically significant differences (P = 0.10) between dose groups (0x, 1x, 3x, and 5x) were observed for only four of the 44 serum chemistry and hematologic variables measured, none of which was dose related. Diflubenzuron can be safely administered orally to horses at 0.12 to 0.20 mg/kg for control of manure-breeding flies. |

Posted on Thursday, Apr 26, 2007 - 8:23 am: I have my horse on the daily wormer, Strongid C2X, and was wondering about the safety of using the feed through fly control product in conjunction with continued use of the daily dewormer product? Should I have reservations about this? I haven't been able to find anything online about the use of these two products at the same time. Thanks! |

Posted on Thursday, Apr 26, 2007 - 12:03 pm: I was glad to see the newest research article on the feed thru that Dr. O posted.I have been wanting to try this stuff, but was always way too parinoid to use it. I am wondering if there are certain brands we should go with, and certain brands to stay away from... do they all contain the same mix of ingredients? As for long term effect...would the course of a summer be considered long term? I would think we would only have to feed this stuff during the fly season...maybe 4 or 5 months. Any other info would be appreciated...and I think Bonny & Buffy should find out about using both products at the same time...does sound like a lot of 'stuff' going thru their horses systems if they used both together. |

Posted on Saturday, Apr 28, 2007 - 3:42 pm: Dr. O,Thanks for your reply. I suppose if a person uses this feed thru fly control just about all the products would be the same...stick with a 'brand' name would be the best bet. Still not sure I am going to use it, but good to know if I do, the horses are safe with it in their systems. (I really hate pumping gobs of junk in a horse). Thanks again!! |
