Dr. O, I was wondering, since it seems that the loading up of vaccinations in the Spring seems to cause possible problems, how long is the Rabies vaccine good for?
Can you give it in the beginning of the year, like in the winter, and have it last the whole year. Or is the vaccine good for longer term as in Dogs. Since Dog Rabies vaccines are good for 3 years, I was hoping the horse one would be too, and if it is not, how come??
Levi had rabies vaccine last year in May, no problems, but I worry with his record of whatever can go wrong/will go wrong!
thanks

Hi susan, I would think if Levi has been o.k with them so far he should remain that way. Hank had a reaction the first time he was given it. He broke out in hives and was very sore....That was when he was a young, skinny pup!

I too wonder why we have to give them yearly? My vet said we can give them anytime of the year and my intention was to give it this winter, but Hank was going thru the bruised sole thing so I didn't want to set anything off.

My vet also said that they vaccinate horses yearly for it because it has never been tested to see how long it lasts in the horse. I think I am going to go with bi-yearly. I'm curious what Dr.O. has to say also. Good Luck.

Check out the article on Rabies for specific information on the vaccine and the Vaccine Schedules for general timing recommendations.

There is currently no Rabies vaccination with a proven 3 year duration in horses, therefore vaccination is recommended yearly.
