Has anyone heard of this? http://www.livestock.novartis.com/west_nile_antibody.html
I didn't search for it, so I apologize if it is already covered. Someone at my barn asked if anyone had any experience with it. Our vet doesn't, neither does Leesburg (Equine Medical Center).
TIA,
Alicia

Janette,
I glanced at it, and it didn't seem alarming? Thanks for telling me where to look :-)

Alarming is a little overstated Janette. I am concerned about how little clinical testing has been done and the lack of long term safety studies but under the conditions outlined in the article this may be worth experimenting with. For those interested see the article on WNV for more.

Overstated it may be but I do agree as with many new horse products and lack of quality study and testing. The problem being some are on terminal list and the slighest improvement spurs production of many things that need long term study in human and equine products. If we could stop the uncontrolled studies and pour that money into the quality studies would be a blessing!
I personally found that alarming if no one else does fine its just my opinion not an order that everyone feel that way. I think for myself and do not expect anyone to regard me as anyone other than a person stating my opinion. I do my homework and try to make sure what I stand behind I have at least researched and/or been my experience. DO NOT BE ALARMED THEN!

A friend has a filly who contracted WNV this year when she was 3-4 months old. The antibody was used on this little girl and she recovered quickly and is fine. Whether the outcome would have been the same without it, I have no idea.

Jordana, was the mare of the foal properly (initial plus booster a month later) vaccinated before birth?

While I cannot say for certain, knowing this person I am quite positive the mare was vaccinated from the get go, as in a couple of years ago, or last year, whenever it was we around here started vaccinating for it, and I feel certain she was up to date on her boosters this year. I will see if I can find out for sure though.

Yes, the mare had been properly vaccinated, both this year and last.

This would probably offer some protection to the foal.
