Have a 4 H group in iowa we are giving each of the members projects. The first one is going to be on preparing your horse for winter. Where are some of the best places for these members to look for information and any suggestions from members is welcome. We want these kids to learn the best care for their horses. This group has not had any instruction and we are starting from scratch.

Janet,
Congratulations on the inception of your club. I just ended 11 years as a 4-H Horse Club leader in Vermont, and it was one of the most rewarding things I ever did . . .

Put out a plea for past horse publications, particularly magazines. Every fall, EQUUS, HORSE & RIDER, HORSE ILLUSTRATED, THE HORSE, and other national and local publications have articles about wintering horses. They are also loaded with photos that the club members can cut out and post, or from which they can sketch their own illustrations for posters. One thing that works really well for demonstrations is to have one member pretend to be the horse, while another member pretends to be the owner. Breyer horses work well in table top exhibits, too.

Have fun.
Holly

Thanks a lot for the information Holly. Checked Horse and Rider web site and found a wealth of information. The suggestion about the model horses was also fantastic.

Hello Janet,
We also have an article on caring for horses in the cold at, » Care for Horses » Routine Care & Procedures » Wintertime: Caring for Horses in the Cold. This article, in an earlier form, was first presented to a 4H group almost 20 years ago.
