Due to my own ineptness, I made a mistake in administering the West Nile modified live vaccine (PreveNile) to my seven horses. I was ok reconstituting for the first four, but I had some interruptions as I was completing the process with he last three. As I was preparing to reconstitute the dose for the last horse I realised I had an extra vial of the dessicated vaccine, which meant that I had injected one horse with the diluent only. I just don't know which of the two it was. I want to re-vaccinate both horses to be safe, but I'm not sure that would be ok for the one who would be getting the second dose. The product description states that in an overdose study, 10X the dose evinced no clinical signs, so, I'm assuming that it would be alright. What do you think, Dr. O? |

Well, given a second dose after recent vaccination is not the same as giving the a 10x dose at one time. In the first case the second dose is going into a horse with a activated immune system. Hmmm what is the past WN vaccine history Jan? DrO |

They were revaccinated with the Fort Dodge WNV vaccine last spring, but not in the fall. They also had been vaccinated with Fort Dodge the spring and summer of the year before. |

Hmmm, I would wait a month then revaccinate the two Jan. There may be slight increased risk of reaction but not much and by studying the article on reactions you can be prepared. If you are extra cautious a pre-dose of flunixin might alleviate any risk, but I would probably not do that personally. Let us know what you decide and how it turns out. DrO |
