Discussion on Panacur Power Pack needed? | |

Posted on Sunday, Nov 23, 2003 - 11:37 am: I bought a yearling in September and was assured she was up-to-date on her worming and she looks to be in very good condition. I gave her a dose of Ivermectin three weeks ago and noticed dead worms in her manure the next 24 hours - I think they were roundworms and bots. Her manure is still a little loose. I ordered several dewormers (ivermectin, oxibendazole and pyrantel – no Quest as I’ve had a bad experience with it and question it’s safety) so I can keep on top of it. But now I’m wondering if I should be administering the Panacur Power Pack. The filly is about 900 pounds. Do you recommend the power pack or dosing with one of the products I have on hand (and should I do it at 4 weeks from the last worming)? I have read all the articles but am unsure of the best course of action given the circumstances. I suspect a fecal test is called for. |

We do not recommend Quest until a year of age ourselves but as long as healthy and the dosage carefully monitored you are leaving out a very important and safe deworming product, for more see article of Overview of Deworming.DrO |

Is that true for Quest as well? And could you clarify what you mean by "after a less aggressive dewormer has been done without incident." Do you mean no visible worms in the manure after worming? |

Looking at a worse case scenario let’s say the tape overestimated the weight by 15% and you dose at 15% over. You will be giving a 30% overdose. Quest is safe up to a 300% overdose, which means you still have a 10x safety factor built in.Concerning the prior deworming with ivermectin: every time you kill a parasite in the bowel you induce a small amount of inflammation in the bowel. Prior deworming helps insure there are not large numbers of parasites and larvae present in the bowel so that the damage done by killing almost all the parasites does not cause enough inflammation to create clinical signs. It is entitled Schedule for Contaminated Pastures. The quickest way to this discussion is to click on Deworming Schedules off the navigation bar above.
