Daily pyrantel pellets are not available in Australia, so I was wondering what the options are for for the third year of the deworming program?
Thanks

Welcome alexan,
You could just have a 2 year cycle and skip the pyrantel. However I do think that you might have some larvidcial dewormers not available here. Using the internet I could not find a simple list. If you can give me a list of the active ingredients of commonly available dewormers approved for horses I might could find another. In general we are not interested in those that end in "bendazole".

Commonly available are moxidectin, ivermectin, abamectin, praziquantel, morantel tartrate, dichlorvos, pyrantel emboate, plus a range of "bendazole" products.
One manufacturer claim that their paste containing oxfendazole and pyrantel acts synergistically against B-Z resistant small strongyles and tapeworms. Is this likely to be a useful product?
Also, during the ivermectin year do you not worry about controlling encysted small strongyles - have had an elderly horse who had a problem with suspected mass emergence of small strongyles in the past, so am keen to avoid a repeat performance.
Thanks for your time

The combination would not be effective against the larval forms is the problem I see with it alexan. Have you considered running fecals in the third year to see if you need to deworm? After two years of a good deworming program and good farm management I have many clients that come off the routine use of dewormers, see the Overview article for more.
