I have been patiently waiting for my wormer to arrive. I use the Strongid daily wormer for my mare. As its going on 3 weeks of no worming should i get a monthly paste wormer and give it to her? How much of a dilemma is this? How long can you safely go before she becomes wormy. This is a perfectly healthy horse, but stabled with many horses.

I have been consistently worming her daily for years, does this timeframe of 3 weeks pose any threats? And if i do give her a monthly paste, do i have to slowly introduce the daily again and treat it like grain introduction?

thanks, joj

I would give her a dose of Quest the day before you start her on the daily again and you can start her at recommended daily dosage.

Thanks! I did read the articles prior to posting. I have a perfectly healthy horse, but want to know where that cut off is. How long before the daily stops being effective. Immediately? Tomorrow? next week? And then how do you reintroduce? like you're beginning from scratch? Add a paste wormer like george says? I think i would use ivermectin instead of quest, though. But i can't remember why :-) Its the simple things i can't remember.. and wading through the articles sometimes just makes it more confusing.

Though I have seen no numbers as I believe the daily stops being effective in a few days following cessation as it passes out the digestive tract. What happens while off the dewormer depends on how badly contaminated the pastures are with worm larvae. If the pasture has parasites, and I assume it does or why use the daily dewormer, you should paste the horse as you start back.

Hi there! I was wondering your opinion on daily worming. We were thinking about starting our horses on it and we were wondering the pro's and cons. Are there any products that work better than others?

I don't use them myself, as I just can't get past the idea of my horses ingesting an "insecticide product" - regardless of its action or inaction in the horse.

However, I will tell you that not very long ago one of the major daily wormer manufacturers (unfortunately, the name escapes me right now) lost a lawsuit brought against it due to the illness & deaths of a number of horses that had been put on their product. Apparently, it was somehow proven that the manufacturer knew the dangers/problems with the product, but neither recalled it, nor labeled it accordingly.

Someone else on here might remember which of the manufacturers it was. It was only a few months ago. The article explaining the lawsuit was posted on a number of different horse internet boards, & the feed & tack stores that I frequent here in Virginia refuse to sell the stuff anymore.

Frank, check out Care for Horses » Deworming & Parasite Control » Overview of Deworming. It gives the pros and cons of daily versus other systems.

Bonita, you remember the case of the feed through fly control product named Equitrol. Strongid (pyrantel) has been shown to be very safe to use but one should study its properties before using it. Frank, check out Care for Horses » Deworming & Parasite Control » Overview of Deworming. It gives the pros and cons of daily versus other systems.
