This mare will be in tomorrow morning about 5:00 a.m. I have never received a mare who has traveled this far before. She is coming in from Paris, Ky and I am at George, in Washington state. She has traversed clear across the United States, got on last Sunday. What should I do for her when she gets here? I have a 20 by 20 covered pen for her with shavings. Water, grass hay. Should I give her any antibiotics, I have Tribissen and Penicillin. She is current on all her vaccines. Should I give her electrolytes, some oral-X B, or anything else?? EO

No prophylactic antibiotics. Really just good care in a stress free environment should be fine. As long as a salt block and free choice water are available she will rapidly correct any water-electrolyte imbalance. If any signs of trouble have her examined. Important is to keep her quarantined from the others by at least the length of a paddock for 21 days.
