Dr. O., I've searched but can not seem to find the answer to the above grains. Which is the lesser of two evils for a possible I.R. horse, to be given about a Cup of either to get the meds/minerals down. One vet says Oats, the other Barley. Thanks for your help and advise. Shirley}

I don't know about the grains, but unsweetened beet pulp is 100% safe for IR horses. Take a cup of beet pulp pellets, soak in 3 cups of water (if you use boiling water it is ready in 15 minutes). You can hide just about any supplements you want in there. My horse doesn't even notice bute! If you need to make it sweet, add a few DrOps of Stevia (glycemic index zero and 10 times sweeter than sugar.)

Recently the importance of glycemic index in managing insulin resistant diabetes in humans has been called into question as a useful management tool. It is often discussed in equine circles as it pertains to certain diseases but the relation between GI and these diseases is very poorly established at this time. I am not sure it is just the amount of disgestible carbohydrate that is important. We had a long discussion on this recently you could run a search on glycemic index to find it.

I suspect that with its higher total energy and lower crude fiber levels that the barley would have a higher GI but the difference may not be great. Much of the energy in beet pulp comes from digestible fiber so it should have a very low GI.
