I have never seen this before on this or any other horse it may be normal, or something weird. I haven't noticed the horse being sore or anything, it is just a hump, same color as sole etc. Feet haven't been trimmed for a while and are a little but not much overdue. So could just be over grown or shedding sole what do you think? Is there anywhere I could see pictures of hoof diseases etc? I have seen the radiographs on laminitis but nothing of the hoof itself.

There is no disease that expresses itself as a hump in the horn and may be as you suggest a area with increased horn thickness. However this would also be what you see with a rotated coffin bone as with founder. This diagnosis would require radiographs to rule in and is unlikely if there has been no history of lameness.

If the sole of a barefoot horse isn't trimmed excessively, you can often see the "sole callous". It's the spot where the sole is rolled over as the horse breaks over from heel to toe. It's usually about 3/4 to an inch front of the point of the frog. The other thing this could be is an extension of the bars. In some horses with healthy feet with well developed bars, the two bars (one on either side of the frog) will extend around the point of the frog. It looks like an half circle of raised sole around the point of the frog about the same thickness as the bars. Neither of these is a cause for concern, rather I think it shows your farrier is careful about leaving plenty of sole intact.

Thanks so much for your help, and yes Julie (What a great name too!!)you are right, I had my farrier out who by the way is a woman and she told me that it was a sole callous which is excellent. Also my gelding who is 28 this year has the half cirle of raised sole aound the point of frog like you mentioned. So wow you were right on the money and so is my farrier it seems.
