Just thought this might be useful for other Northern European users of this website. I have just had the following reseeded into one of our fields on the advice of local seed merchants. It came with a Department of Agriculture docket so I presume it's "officially" approved for horses.

Horse grass seed mix - 12 kg for 1 acre

2 kg Cashel
2 kg Magician
2 kg Tivoli
3.5 kg Glad O
1.5 kg Strong Creeping Red Fescue
1 kg Timothy
plus
0.5 kg Clover

I was worried about the fescue but apparently it's not the kind that grows the fungus which causes abortion in mares.

Now it's up to the man above to send us a spot of rain...

Hello Imogen,

While no longer living in Northern Europe or the UK, I am familiar with Red Fescue, Timothy and Clover. The others Glad O, Tivoli, Magician and Cashel, I have no idea what they are. I am assuming they are a type of grass. Would an agricultural agent or representative be able to tell you more information about this?
Perhaps you could check back with the seed man and ask for the "Botanical" names specifically so you could research the properties of such.

As for the man upstairs and his rain schedule, why don't you ask?

I look up those I could... Cashel is an intermediate perennial rye. Magician is an intermediate tetraploid perennial rye. Tivoli is a late tetraploid perennial rye. I can't find Glad O anywhere but perhaps I've spelled it wrong!

Susan - do you think kid's programmes date as well as geographically place people? I'm a Clangers girl myself!

It would be interesting to know if the seed mixture was a prepackaged blend or if it was a mixture that was specially made for you and your environment. (Soil suitability and climate)
The "Glad O" or whatever that is makes up the large portion of your mixture.
Perhaps it is the base grass that will give your pasture the strong foundation it needs to stand up to grazing and DrOughts.
Where I live now, we are supposed to have rain tommorrow.

I never did see the "Clangers", perhaps it was because I moved across the pond and it wasn't available here.

I suspect anyone who knows what a Soup Dragon is becomes instantly dated... actually my brothers and I referred to my mother as the Soup Dragon behind her back for many yearsl much to her mystification.

Anyway, I'll ask my friendly farmer friend what Glad O might be. I tried looking up Gladio or Gladiator on the 'net but nothing appropriate appeared.

I don't know what a Soup Dragon is, soooo...I guess I can't be dated. Did some looking on the net about Soup Dragons and this one in particular made green soup from spinach and it tasted like peppermint. My horse would eat that!

The Glad O could be a typo on the report or a exclusive ingredient to your grass mixture.

I find your post interesting because, if I were to go and purchase a mixture for pasture planting I would not get a variety name like you have posted.

Here's hoping the rain God will bless you and your newly seeded pasture.

Boy, I haven't thought about Noddy (and Big Ears) in donkey's years! Got me thinking about other shows like The Magic Roundabout, Blue Peter, The Herbs and daily horse racing on TV when I'd get home from school...

Clangers is a new one on me, Imogen - can't ever remember seeing that as a kid. Was it only aired in Ireland?
