I opened up a bag of sweet feed last night and a bunch of moths flew out.

Shall I assume it's bad and throw it out?

I did a search on moths and only found references in the Potomac Fever section--we haven't had any rain/are not near water, but the bugs look similar to the ones in the picture. Also looked up weevils--do moths come from weevils?

Anyway, I guess when in doubt don't feed it, but thought I'd ask???

cp,
I have had meal worms in flour or cereals before, and they do hatch into little beige/gray moths.

They usually spin some sort of web . . . not big like a spider web, but web-like nonetheless.

I wouldn't eat it for myself.

Good way to gauge Holly. I don't think I could feed it with a clear conscious, especially not knowing if it's harmful.

I think I'll put it somewhere in the field and see if it grows.

Wow!!! Maybe a harvest of sweet feed is in store for you!! You can just cut and bale it. . . . or use it for grazing . . . if the mice don't get to it first.

Or the dogs, they seem to love the stuff! But those seeds never really seems to digest, they sprout up everywhere. I don't really feed it for meals anymore cause it seems like such a waste, but I keep some around for snacks here and there.

We'll see what kind of harvest arises (if we ever get rain that is)!

Speaking of mice Holly I think I told you one hopped into my rubbermade container I was using to store saddle pads and died....and the smell after a 10 day vacation in a sealed bin is still stuck in my nose. Then I come home.....2 hours from the barn and all of sudden I find mouse droppings in the house. I initially thought they were in my horse laundry but so far the horse laundry has been laundered and more droppings.....eeek. I am going to get a trap...maybe one came through the dog door to get away from the snake outside...whose skin was shed in my yard. Don't blame the guy. I will set a humane trap....(I know I am a city girl and can't kill anything but flies and spiders) and drive it off base. Now if I see the snake in the house bye bye doggie door and bye bye Corinne as I might have a heart attack on the spot.
Anyway, back to the post....interesting, wouldn't feed as well. But I do like the idea of growing your own sweet feed. Maybe you are on to something...you could patten it CP and sell it wholesale to all of us. LOL. That way we would have more money for horsey things and HA get togethers. LOL.
Have a good night...and oh by the way....get your money back.

Cp, nice crop of sweet feed sounds good, but you might consider taking it back to the store you bought it from. It is probably not the only bag that went bad. If there is anything harmful, I'm sure they'd like to know.
Besides, they should know that it wasn't properly stored.

You haven't had excitement until you've had a mouse run up your sleeve and down your shirt!! There was one in the feed once and I caught it in a coffee can and was going to put it outside. It ran out of the coffee can and up my sleeve! I started screaming, making weird noises and jumping up and down trying to shake it out. Quite a thrill! You can imagine what the horses and other people thought!
