Dr. O - I was wondering what your thoughts are concerning these products? Do you prefer one over the other?

Lately around here everyone has been saying that Recombitek is the way to go, & that one should "insist" their vet use that over the older Fort Dodge product. In addition, there seems to be differing advice as to how to administer Recombitek if one used the Fort Dodge vaccine originally. Some folks say that you can use the Recombitek just as you would your regular booster, while others say that because the vaccine works differently, you have to start the series over again (i.e. initial shot, then another 3-6 weeks later, then annually thereafter).

What are your views on this?

Hello Bonita,
I am still using the Fort Dodge and continuing to watch the information on Merial. It appears that protection is similar (about 90% with both) with perhaps a nod to the Merial product. If there are any big changes in the information I will report them to all.

Hi Susan,
I can assure you it is not just a USA thing. We have WNV in Saskatchewan and across Canada.

We used the FD product the past 2 years, but will likely switch to the Merial product next year. I don't think you have to start the series over, it's my understanding we just condintue with one shot. The Merial vaccine seems to already be the vaccine of choice up here.

WNV has been well established in most of the rest of the world for a long time. The article Equine Diseases » Nervous System » West Nile Virus gives a history I believe.
