I'm in Hawaii where we have yet to have any cases of the virus. Our vet started us on the vaccine last year. There's been some talk about the vaccine causing miscarriages. Is there any evidence of this and are there any articles regarding this. Thanks, Cece

There have been a lot of wild rumors floating around about the WNV vaccine by Fort Dodge. Most of these rumors are based upon suppositions by owners without any evidence to back up their claims.
Many of the people who made this claims also used the vaccine in a pregnant mare, which it is not approved for, and in the first 3 months of pregnancy, when any kind of vaccine is a no-no.

This link is to the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service notice regarding those claims and the safety of the vaccine:

There have been many articles posted on the web about these claims. Do a google search for News & "lost foals" & WNV

So far all the research and clinical experience with this vaccine has shown it to be relatively safe in pregnant mares however any horse can have a serious reaction to any vaccine. The use of a vaccine is based on the balance to risk and threat. If this disease is not a threat why does your vet recommend vaccination?

Dr.O

Our vet considers it a precautionary measure. New horses come into Hawaii from all states quite often. Also, I believe our Health Dept. suggested it.
