I recently changed housing arrangements to put my Appy mare and TB gelding, both age 5 years, together. Sure, they argue about food and such, but they seem to get along okay. Yesterday I noticed a big ol' lump on her throat, about big enough to cup my palm over. Also the hair is missing from an area around it. No heat, no open wound - just a slightly tender lump that seems to be a part of the underlying tissue.

Did he bite her? Or kick her? Or could it be some other sinister thing that needs immediate attention?

Sure am glad you're there to field this sort of question.

Well Larry, maybe, but how about rubbed it over the stall door or widnow ledge?

I had a lump as you describe (different area though) and it was caused by a tick. I found it imbedded just above the lump a few inches.
Probably not likely but worth a check.

Well ticks are pretty rare around here (SoCal), but I checked anyhow. Could've been a rub across the pipe corral, but there's no "wound," just this "lump."

BUT, the most important thing I'm hearing - I think - is that I don't need to fret?? No heat, no open wound, little tenderness, I'm expecting it'll just go away.

Am I right?

The problem Larry is we cannot examine the swelling so do not know whether this may need further attention. If you have a little scrape with a little swelling, no puncture wound after a careful look, it certainly does not sound like much but all we know is what you tell us. Signs that you may need help is if instead of improving the swelling becomes larger or painful.

Thanks Dr O,

The swollen area seems to be *changing* if not getting smaller. Maybe getting more "pointy," and possibly smaller, but it's hard to say. Still not tender, and no open wound of any sort - so I'll just continue to monitor it.
