Dr. O, one of the three weanlings I got this weekend had a WNV vaccination when she had a hernia repair three weeks ago. She is supposed to have a booster by Monday. None of them are halter broke and I have just started the process. I think I can probably give her the shot, but would prefer not to hurry the halter breaking to do it by tomorrow! Questions: 1) I don't know what vaccine she was given--does the booster need to be the same manufacturer? 2) We've had a good frost and I haven't seen any mosquitos for a couple of weeks--do I have to give the booster, and 3) if I don't give it, what do I do next spring? 4) for the other two, what about the Prevenile which is supposed to be only one shot with 12 months efficacy? 5) Do you think I can wait until next Spring with the other two--we don't have mosquitos before March. Hope I haven't exceeded the maximum questions for a Monday!! Thanks, Julie

Taking them one ar a time: 1) To properly vaccinate you need to follow the instructions on the bottle. If you choose to finish the initial series you should find out what brand was given. 2) If your foal is not at risk of WNV till the spring why would you have to give the vaccine now? I cannot think of any reason. 3) If you do not complete the series this time you will start a whole series in the spring. 4) The article explains its use. 5) See answer #3.
