I read the articles about de-wormers and printed out the schedule that would suit my horses best. They were both last de-wormed in July with Ivermectin and are due for another. My question is, do you do one year based on the ivermectin year schedule and then do the next year on the quest year schedule and continue to rotate every year? I talked with my vet about what I should use and he suggested Ivermectin every 2-3 months and rotate to something else after a year. I just want to get them on a good all-around schedule.

Hi Kelly

This in my opinion has so many varieties, I've been told to worm once a year or every six months.
However I normally worm my horses every 5 to 6 weeks and I try to alternate each time,Invermectine, Panacure, Strongid P and so far it has worked fine.

Allthe best

I also worm every six to eight weeks. Also rotating wormers and have had great results.

You have it Kelly, follow the timing schedule closely and monitor those fecals.

Though in some situations Leoan and Liliana's schedule might be suitable there is no provision for tapes and in many situations would allow a low grade large strongyle infection to persist and shorten their horses life span due to the verminous arteritis caused by large strongyles. There is a high degree of resistance to both Strongid and Panacur in most areas and parasitologists feel the rapid rotation results in quicker formation of resistance.

Hi Kelly,

Thanks for posting this thread, I was under the mistaken impression we should rotate more often. Just this year I rotated using the Zimectrin Gold, panacur, ivermectin, and equimax. I'll just use ivermectin until next year this time.

Thanks!

Thanks for all of your opinions. You hear of so many different ways to de-worm and it's hard to decide on one to follow. I agree with Dr O about not rotating except yearly, plus it's easier to remember and stick to. Thanks again.
