DrO,
I had my 8mo colt castrated 35 days ago. All went relatively well, except that the incision was rather small, I think, for adequate drainage.
I administered penicillin for the first 10 days per vet's suggestion. I also gave him bute for the first three days.
It drained steadily for 20 days or so, and swelling was normal to minimal. There was no significant stiffness after the first day.
Now the incision is closed, there is very little swelling in the prepuce (barely visible in the morning), but there's a hard lump where his testicles were, about a handful of it. It is painful to rub, but he'll let me do it.
Our vet says this lump is normal and it will minimise with time, which it very slowly does.
The colt is in top mood and has no fever.
Is such scar tissue really normal? Is there anything I can do besides trying to promote circulation in the area?

Depending on how big your hand is maybe a little more than normal Christos, but the lack of pain on palpation and normal otherwise all suggests it is granulation tissue (really to early for a scar). The body will resolve a lot of this and as it converts to scar it will greatly reduce in size, I believe. At the very least as the colt grows this becomes relatively smaller.

Thanks a lot, Doctor, I have no experience with the proceedings of castration and this thing got me worried a bit.
I guess I owe my vet an apology for doubting him here.

I recently purchased a two year old colt. He is registered and I don't see on any of his papers where he has been castrated. We were discussing getting it done, but his testicles still haven't dropped. Is it uncommon for a two year old to not have dropped yet? Just wondering? We wanted to wait to see if he would feel out a little more due to not being well nourished previously but we didn't want to wait very much longer. Should he have dropped by now? How long should we wait to see if he does? Do we really need to wait til he drops or can we go ahead?

Uncommon yes but cryptorchids (retained testicles) occur. I don't know how experienced you are Shelly, I find testicles every month that the owner could not feel. Then again at 2yr they should be pretty easy to see and feel. The articles associated with this forum explains how to know if there are retained testicles, click on Castration in Horses above for more information.

Shelly
I have a similar situation with a rescue colt who is now 1 1/2 yrs. The vet was out for routine vac/coggins and I had him feel as I had not been able to detect any testicles. In his educated opinion my colt had been castrated. The colt had been through 2 auction houses by the age of 4mo. before I got him. My vet told me at one of the auctions he was at it was common practice for the yahoos to hobble colts and cut them there, no anesthesia , no medical attention. Of course that is no guarentee and I will still watch for signs of studlyness.
