Posted on Sunday, Feb 13, 2005 - 7:49 pm: Hi,I was recently told to keep from getting very many bots in August and September I should worm for bots the end of April or beginning of May. I have always wormed every 8 weeks and when the time came to use a product for bots I used it not really making sure if it was the beginning of May or the end. So does it make a difference on when you worm to determine if you will have bot flys in the summer? Thanks Lori |

So the best time for treatment is a bit different for different species. We suggest you follow our schedules for effective control against all parasite. For more on bots see, Equine Diseases » Colic and GI Diseases » Parasites and Worms » Bots (Gastrophilus spp).DrO |

Posted on Friday, Feb 25, 2005 - 6:12 pm: Hi,I would like to put all three of my horses on a daily wormer, and wanted to know when I can start them on the daily, if they were wormed in January 2005? I do not want to harm anything, just want to make a change. As well, do I still need to worm for bots, if I have all on Strongid C2X? Sorry if this was covered, I tried to read many threads before writing. Thanks, Ruth |

The articles are organized to answer your most likely questions. Not only are your questions answered in the article associated with this forum but other issues with this type program are addressed that you need to know about. Just click on Deworming Schedules off the navigation bar above and look in the article for the daily pyrantel program. DrO |

Posted on Saturday, Feb 26, 2005 - 9:11 am: DrO,Sorry if I am a bother to you. I did read your overviews, scientific reports and the schedules. I simply could not find anyhwhere how one might make a change from paste to daily, particularly when the horses were just done. I wasn't sure if I needed to wait until they were due again for paste, test them and start daily, or if I might start daily now. If that was somewhere in the overview, again sorry. It was after reading the overview that I have decided to make the change. Ruth |

Posted on Saturday, Feb 26, 2005 - 10:24 am: You are not a bother Ruth it is just your comments suggested you had read discussions (and perhaps not the articles) and the Schedule Article tells you specifically about how to start the daily pyrantel regimen and how to handle bots when using the daily pyrantel regimen so I thought you might not have read it. Your past deworming schedule does not matter just follow the instructions in the article.DrO |

Posted on Saturday, Feb 26, 2005 - 10:35 am: Hi Lori,If it helps you to understand, allow me to explain what I perceive about the situation. Daily wormers do not kill the established worms inside the horse. They do prevent the worm development from newly ingested eggs and larva. If you are starting daily wormer you still need to worm immediatly before starting to eliminate any encysted and/or egg laying adult worms already within the horse. The daily wormer should prevent reinfestation. Hope this helps clarify. Dr. O, please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Erika |
