There seems to be a lot of different opinions about how soon the horse can go back to regular work after being vaccinated. What would be a good guideline providing that the horse is not showing an elevation in body temperature or any other adverse reaction to the inoculation ? |

I would keep it light for 3 days but there is no reason they cannot work the next day if there are no symptoms of soreness. In fact work may minimize the soreness. DrO |

Ah, this is just what I wanted to ask. So, light exercise is ok the day after an influenza/tetanus vaccination? I have been told that horses must be prevented from any activity which would make them sweat after a 'flu shot? Is this true? Many thanks for your time |

Catrine, you are right, there are a lot of opinions about this. I have always thought that it was because every horse is different and the vaccines also can produce different effects. I know the few times I have had tetanus it hurts like heck for at least a day or two. I always wonder why the horses don't get as sore from this one. I have a friend whose horse can hardly put his head down to eat after certain vaccines(can't remember which). I usually ride mine after, I just take it easy. I have never had a sore horse, or at least that I could tell. Good question. Shelley |
