Posted on Wednesday, Apr 20, 2005 - 6:23 pm: DrO,My 10yr. old gelding came out of winter this year in what I consider a thin to moderately thin condition. I have had him for 5 yrs. and he has always been in the moderate weight range. I was concerned so I revisited my management practices. My feeding and workout schedule has been the same for the last several years. My hay didn't look as good this year so I thought that might be the reason. Since my pasture has sprung up over the last 3 weeks and he is out 24/7, I figured this would resolve and he would put weight back on, but he hasn't. I am thinking about my deworming schedule now. I follow your deworming schedule, but I did miss March deworming (I wormed in Jan and again in April). I am very good about this usually, but for some reason, I was thinking your schedule called for once a year double dosing for tapes. I notice that it actually says twice a year for tapes. So now I know that I may have a wormy horse. I wormed with ivermectin April 1. I just bought some strongid daily feed through wormer and started it 4/18. How long will it take for the daily wormer to kill tapes? Should I go ahead and paste worm for tapes now or should I wait 4 weeks and paste worm with ivermectin/praziquantel? I have read so many articles that I am getting a little confused. My pony gelding is in beautiful condition (a little on the plump side, but on a dry lot now). He is on the same deworming schedule. Hopefully, I am just underdosing my gelding and it is not a more serious health issue, as he otherwise seems quite normal. Thank you. |

But the old recommendations worked for decades and just missing a single deworming is not going to change things remarkably. So if parasites are your problems the reason lies elsewhere and the article on Overview of Deworming outlines how to test your program, something you should do.Concerning deworming just follow the pasting schedule accurately, since you dewormed for tapes in Dec if you have been following our old schedule. I am uncertain daily pyrantel kills adult tapes. On the other hand your thoughts about the hay are right on: the quality of the main forage of the horse is of critical importance. Just because your pony, who is far more efficient with his calories, is doing well does not mean this is not the problem. Winter let-down is a common and most horses come out of it when the spring grass comes in. 3 weeks may not be enough time to see results. To prevent it from happening next year watch your hay quality or make other adjustments, for more see Overview of Feeding. DrO |

Posted on Friday, Apr 22, 2005 - 7:44 am: Dr O,I have read the articles on Dewroming and parasite control. Being new to horses, I think I understand most of it, but I am still not sure on rotation. The last two wormings, I used a product called combocare gel, which states that it covers all including tapeworms and boticide. Can I use this all the time or should I rotate it with Ivermectin. They seem to be doing great. Also, I am considering moving my horse with a fellow that trains horses, but the water on his property for them comes from the irrigation canal that runs that runs through the Salt Lake City valley. I know a lot of animals drink from it, but I am hesitant about how safe it is. Any thoughts? |
