I'm new to the area and would like to get opinions re: services - vet, hay dealers, farriers, etc.

Michelle,

Thanks so much for your response. Unfortunately Moscow isn't close enough to pick your brain about good local farriers, vets or hay producers, but it's nice to know there is a Horseman's Adviser member "nearby." By the way, welcome to HA. I rarely post, but I've learned tons in the years I've been a member.

Patricia, I'm in Southwest Idaho--not close by any means, but I have an excellent vet and a great farrier. Email me at the email in my profile for their names and numbers. Perhaps they would have a reccommendation. The farrier does clinics and may have had an attendee from your area.

We're in Weippe - which is getting closer - but afraid we're far enough away that sources wouldn't be much help - There is plenty of hay up here - but absolutely no other resources. We even order our dog food and his treats. We're new too and I'm just hoping I can manage to make it through the winter without needing a vet. The road up here is 17 miles of switchbacks - two lane - with many curves marked down to 15 mph - Right now we have close to 18 inches of snow on the ground with snow predicted for the next 10 days - probably another foot or more. Your best bet would be to talk with local horsemen -

Cheryl,

Thanks for your response. We're at a much lower elevation than you so the most snow we've had at one time is 5 inches, and that didn't come until last weekend. I came from Maryland and am used to having horse resources much closer than what I'm finding here. It takes a bit of getting used to! I've been worried about having enough hay for the winter, but I think I'm going to be OK. With producers getting only one cutting each year in this area, getting small bales of reasonably good hay is not as easy as I would like. Hope your horses stay safe and you'll have no need for a vet.
