Dr. O Quote: The problem is that for some very easy keepers a wholes days forage ... is too much time with our modern rich feeds. Dr. O, above is a quote from the topic of overweight horses. I've copied it here because I was wondering if you could provide additional information or sources on grasses/forage that would be better for the typical 'light in work' mature pleasure horse. For example, if a person is starting from scratch in seeding a pasture, what forage would you pick if the goal is to allow typical easy-keeper pleasure horse to graze all day? Thanks for your help. I've been doing a good bit of reading on this topic for over a year now and find it a bit difficult to sort it all out. MaryS |

I am not sure if you are looking for recommendations for "the very easy keeper" which really describes horses with a metabolic disorder or "the typical light in work mature pleasure horse". These are two different horses and the typical horse has no problem with living on most pasture. In general I recommend you plant pasture according to your local extension service's recommendations for horses choosing a hardy grass or grass/clover mixture tailored to your area. DrO |

Thanks for Dr. O for the dose of common sense – as per usual! I am referring to the healthy mature horse, in light work, no known health problems so your recommendation fits. MaryS |
