So my adorable ottb has gotten himself into mischief again. He rolled too close to the fence, got his leg caught, and required nine stitches on his gaskin. He is consistently determined to roll near fences, and I thought I was doing the right thing by looking away and telling myself, "They usually get themselves out of these situations, stop worrying". However, today the inevitable happened-and I think this is what happened when he got five staples in his fetlock last September.

So my strange question-other than electrifying the fence line, does anyone have ANY thoughts on how to keep him from rolling near fences? Thanks!

**His turnout was changed from a small paddock to a much larger one. However, the sand seems to be irresistible for rolling on the "outskirts".

Hi Gwen,

Will they let you dump some sand in some central indentation? That might lure him away from the fenceline. I have a 2yo that gets cast upside down against her fence-- sometimes 3x/week. I scattered leftover wood scrap in her favorite corner, and it seemed to break the pattern. But that may not be practical on a long fenceline. I'd encourage him to roll elsewhere. If he continues, would they allow you to turn him loose in the arena for ten minutes after he works? He might get his rolling done in there more safely?

Thanks for the reply, Elizabeth. I am apprehensive about asking for anything. I feel like I am high-maintenance as it is. When the ground dries up a bit more, I think he will go out into a grassy area, which will be good. Now we just have to get through the next ten days of stall rest!
