I lost my very loyal and loving Jack donkey Saturday to a terrible accident. He and his Jenny's have lived in the same pasture for 8 years. He was chasing the Jenny's, which is a usual occurrence, and ran head on into a tree limb. He broke his neck and died instantly.

Please, everyone check you pastures for low hanging limbs that might have grown out over the last several years.

How sad, Peggy. Accidents are inevitable, no matter how careful we are. Thank you for sharing in order to spare other horses and donkeys and equine owners from the same experience.

Thanks for the kind words. It has been hard but I am thankful that there was no suffering. He had an exceptional disposition and will be missed. Peggy

Hi Peggy, really sorry to hear of your loss, It is absolutely tragic for you to lose your boy this way, to speak personally, I can say that last year I turned a horse away to pasture and on daily inspection found he had an 18inch gash in his side. It was a long straight cut and looked like he had been slashed with a knife. We walked the pasture and could not see anything untoward
until we came to a low hung branch that had still got pieces of his flesh attached. In the summer when the tree had started to dry out, it became razor sharp and when playing or having a yehaa with the others he had then run against this branch, hence the accident. Thankyou again for sharing this with us as a warning that our occurence may have been much worse

My deepest condolences Peggy but there is a bright spot here. When I go, I hope it is chasing my "jenny" around the pasture, seriously.

Dr. O.,
I had been thinking of adding something similar to my above post . . . "He died happily doing something he loved" . . . but I didn't know if it sounded right . . . but the way you phrased it is priceless . . . and so true.

I'm deeply sorry for your loss, Peggy.
As children we were teasing my grandma for we were mounted on horses, like kings, whilst she was trailing behind on her donkey like a servant. She'd smile sweetly and say that she was mounted like the King of Kings and that this will take us many years, if ever, to understand.

Dr. O, my husband said just about the same thing. George had foundered three years ago and every spring it was an ordeal to keep him comfortable. He was apparently feeling up to the task! At least his feet won't hurt anymore. Time will tell if one of the jennys is in foal.

Christos, your grandma certainly had it right. She must have been a great influence in your life.

Thanks again to all for caring. One of the hardest parts was taking my gelding horse to see him before we buried him. But after reading earlier posts I knew we had to do that since they had been companions for the last several years. I think it made things OK for Champ.

It is so quiet on our farm now.

Peggy, So sorry to hear of your terrible loss. You should know that there are lots of us walking our pastures and looking for dangerous conditions because of your post. I sawed off two small limbs myself this morning.
Thank you for the warning, during this sad time.

Just wanted to update those that are interested. We have a new foal and she is the spitting image of her dad! She is spotted, white and grey. I had really hoped she would look like George but the jenny's last two foals were black. She's a keeper! She was born Friday night and all is well. Our mustang who is pastured across the road is beside himself! He's running up and down the fence line being very vocal.. it's funny to watch him.

Congratulations Peggy on your new baby. I am so glad that she is like her daddy. Funny how things work out. You will be very proud and I hope she has the temperment of her dad too.

Best wishes, and please show us some pics of the little lady!

Peggy.....Sorry about George. While his memory will live on forever having a new little one that has some of the same traits and I bet some of the same personality will make it all the much more vivid and sweeter!

Christos I like your story of your Grandma's explanation of why she was riding the donkey.

Have a good day!
